The Coincidence of Coconut Cake

by Amy E. Reichert

The Coincidence of Coconut CakeI think I am the only person in my family who loves coconut cake. I make a good one if I follow the directions on the Baker’s Sweetened Angel Flake Coconut bag – delicious! Moreover, there are health benefits to this tasty fruit: coconut oil, milk, water, and flour. This is exciting stuff. In addition to good coconut cake, you will love Amy E. Reichert’s novel The Coincidence of Coconut Cake.

Chef Lou Johnson is passionate about her restaurant – Louella’s, named after her grandmother. Her life seems okay – she has a fiancé, she loves her restaurant and is passionate about food. Her fantastic staff supports her and works beside her relentlessly. It’s Devlin’s birthday, and Lou decides to surprise her fiancé with his favorite coconut cake.

When Lou discovers a skimpily clad office worker, in Devlin’s apartment, the fight or flight instinct kicks in, and Lou flees the situation. She attempts to bury her pain in her work, but only manages to upset the staff and deliver one disgraceful meal after the other to her few but loyal restaurant guests. Before she can stop herself, the tasteless, raw, burnt food finds its way to the table of British food critic, Al Waters. When Waters writes a scathing review of Louella’s, Lou’s world crashes. Again.

On her own, since her parents died, Lou is a survivor. How will she endure her pain and save her failing restaurant?

Warning – I suggest you secure a large wedge of coconut cake, or two, to have on hand as you read this book. Yummy!

Further reading – Amy’s latest book is The Optimist’s Guide to Letting Go and is receiving grand reviews.

coconut-in-sandFootnote:  “Botanically speaking, a coconut is a fibrous one-seeded drupe, also known as a dry drupe. However, when using loose definitions, the coconut can be all three: a fruit, a nut, and a seed.” (Everyday Mysteries)
